On March 16, the Blue House said it would approach President Donald Trump’s request that South Korea send warships to the Strait of Hormuz with caution, saying Seoul and Washington should take adequate time for thorough consultations before making a decision.

Lee Kyu-yeon, the Blue House senior secretary for public communication, told reporters this at a briefing.

He said officials are tracking foreign media reports about U.S. intentions but stressed Seoul needs a clear U.S. position and is working to ascertain Washington’s true intent.

Asked about the size and timing of a supplementary budget under review, he said economic authorities are still examining the matter and have not yet reported to the Blue House. He emphasized the principle is clear: it will be processed expeditiously.

Separately, he said President Lee Jae-myung criticized the response to a stalking-related murder in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, calling the authorities’ actions slow and well short of public expectations.

The president expressed condolences to the victim’s family and ordered an investigation into the officials responsible for the incident, directing that strict disciplinary measures be taken.
