By Han Ji-suk, Herald Economy — An elementary-school girl playing at a playground in Buk District, Daegu, was struck by a live round from a K2 rifle and injured.
Military and police officials said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. the previous day at a playground inside an apartment complex in Buk District, where the girl was hit in the area below her neck.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where surgeons removed fragments from her body. Authorities said her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
The Ministry of National Defense and other agencies confirmed the fragments were the projectile tips from 5.56 mm rounds used in the K2 rifle.
An army base sits near the scene. Officials said soldiers were conducting live-fire training with K2 rifles at an on-base firing range about 1.5 km away in a straight line at the time.
The K2’s effective range is roughly 600 m, and its maximum range is about 3.3 km.
The army has launched an investigation and suspended all individual small-arms live-fire training pending the inquiry.
