President Trump has asked oil‑importing nations, including South Korea, to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz, prompting pushback from communities in the port city of Incheon.

On March 17, the Incheon chapter of Peace Sovereignty Action—known locally as Peace Beyond—issued a statement calling any naval deployment to the Strait of Hormuz “an illegal act of joining a murderous war.” The group warned Seoul not to repeat what it called the Roh Moo‑hyun administration’s failure over the Iraq deployment.

The chapter accused the U.S. and Israel of launching the conflict under the pretext of stopping Iran’s nuclear program, saying the death toll has already climbed into the thousands, including elementary school children. It called the fighting plainly illegal and criminal, arguing it flagrantly violates the U.N. Charter’s prohibition on the use of force and breaches the Geneva Conventions’ protections for civilians.

The group added that the government’s response to a Hormuz deployment request will be a defining test for the administration of Lee Jae‑myung, which it described as born of the “Revolution of Light.” It urged the administration not to fail and said it sincerely hopes for the government’s success.

The Incheon branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) also released a statement calling on the Lee administration to firmly reject the request to send forces to the Strait of Hormuz.

The KCTU’s Incheon chapter said a deployment would amount to participating in a massacre carried out for the benefit of the U.S. and Israel and urged the international community to work to halt the fighting rather than escalate it. The union warned Seoul not to sacrifice national interests for U.S. gains, called for an immediate end to what it described as American aggression, and said the Korean government should pursue diplomacy and peacebuilding instead of sending troops.
