Pope Leo 14 presided over his first Easter Mass and used the occasion to urge people to lay down their arms and pursue peace through dialogue.

AFP and The Associated Press reported that on April 5 (local time), Leo 14 told worshippers gathered in St. Peter’s Square that “we have grown accustomed to violence; we have become numb to thousands of deaths and to the hatred and division sown by conflict.”

He did not explicitly name the ongoing conflicts in Iran or Ukraine, but he warned, “Those who hold weapons should lay them down. Those with the power to start wars should choose peace.”

He stressed that peace cannot be imposed by force. It must be built through dialogue — from a willingness to meet others, not from a desire to dominate them.

In his Urbi et Orbi blessing — Latin for “to the city [of Rome] and to the world” — Leo 14 departed from the long-standing practice of naming specific countries or regions in crisis.

He plans to hold a prayer gathering for peace in St. Peter’s Square on the 11th.
