Axios, citing anonymous sources, reported the strikes hit Kharg Island a day before the final deadline set by President Donald Trump. State-affiliated Mehr News Agency said the island came under multiple airstrikes and that explosions were heard repeatedly.
Kharg Island, off Iran’s southern coast in the Persian Gulf, handles more than 90% of the country’s crude oil and petroleum product exports. Damage to those export facilities would be a major blow to Iran’s energy sector. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said on March 14 it had carried out precision strikes against roughly 90 military targets on Kharg Island — including a naval mine storage area and missile bunkers — and that oil infrastructure had not been targeted at that time.
Reports of the strikes followed a vow by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to resist. On X (formerly Twitter) he wrote, “More than 14 million Iranians are ready to lay down their lives,” adding, “I have given my life for Iran, and I will gladly sacrifice myself for my country now and in the future.”
At a press conference on April 6, President Trump warned that if Iran did not accept terms by 8 p.m. Eastern on April 7 (9 a.m. KST on April 8), he would burn every Iranian power plant and bridge within four hours.
On the day before the deadline, airstrikes began striking bridges, rail lines and other transport infrastructure across Iran. Mehr quoted the governor of Isfahan province saying the U.S. and “Zionists” (a term used for Israel) attacked the Yahia-Abad railway bridge in the Kushan area, killing two civilians and wounding three.
In northwest Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, a projectile struck the Tabriz–Tehran highway about 90 km north of Tabriz, halting traffic in both directions. The route is a key artery to northern Iran. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said an overpass on the highway had been bombed.
Local media also reported strikes hit a bridge on the outskirts of Qom, rail lines in Qazvin in the north and rail lines west of Tehran in Karaj. Those cities have frequent transport links to the capital. Attacks on transmission lines in Karaj and nearby Pardis caused localized power outages.
