Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, declared victory over Iran, The Associated Press reported April 8 (local time).

At a Pentagon press conference, Hegseth said U.S. forces achieved a decisive victory in military operations against Iran. He said a defeated Iran begged for a cease-fire and that its military has been effectively destroyed. He added that Iran’s missile program has been rendered nonfunctional and that its factories were left in rubble.

Hegseth said the United States used less than 10% of its total combat power to repel Iran and called it “a real opportunity for peace.” He said Iran will soon hand over enriched uranium to the United States and that the Defense Department had done its part over the past few months.

The previous day, President Donald Trump warned, “Today one civilization will disappear entirely.” He threatened a maximum attack if negotiators did not reach a settlement by 8 p.m. on the 7th (9 a.m. Korea time).

Around 6:30 p.m., about an hour and a half before the negotiation deadline, Pakistan proposed a two-week cease-fire. Both sides accepted, producing a dramatic truce. Hegseth emphasized that, as a condition of the cease-fire, Iran must immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
