Iran Limits Vessel Passage to 15 Ships Daily in Historic US Ceasefire Agreement

Yonhap Iran will open the Strait of Hormuz under terms of a cease-fire agreement with the United States, but it will strictly cap daily transits at 15 vessels, TASS reported April 9 (local time).

A senior Iranian source told TASS, “Under the cease-fire agreement with the United States, we will allow no more than 15 vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz per day.” The source added that all ship movements will be permitted only with approval from Iranian authorities and subject to specific protocols.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran had informed mediators it would limit daily transits to about 12 vessels during the cease-fire and impose passage fees.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint that handles roughly 20% of the world’s seaborne oil shipments. After the recent escalation in the Middle East conflict, the strait had been effectively closed.
