Russia’s TASS reported that Iran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under the terms of a ceasefire with the U.S., but will limit daily transits to 15 vessels.

A senior Iranian source told TASS that all vessel movements would be conditionally permitted only after approval by Iranian authorities and compliance with specific protocols.

The transit protocol appears to require ships to use an alternative route announced by Tehran the previous day and to submit to oversight by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The alternative route runs closer to Iran’s Larak Island — home to an Iranian military base — rather than the traditional shipping lane that lies largely in Omani territorial waters.

Iran has formally notified key regional states of the new policy, the report said.

Analysts view the move as an effort to maximize Tehran’s leverage ahead of ceasefire talks scheduled to take place in Pakistan.
