U.S. and Iranian delegations appear to have opened talks in Islamabad on the 11th (local time) aimed at ending the war.
Iranian outlets IRNA, Tasnim and Mehr reported that negotiations between Tehran and Washington began in Islamabad at around 5:30 p.m. Pakistan time.
Tasnim said both sides decided to begin talks to resolve outstanding issues after intensive consultations in Islamabad, citing progress on the ground, Israel refraining from strikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon, and U.S. agreement to unfreeze certain Iranian assets.
Reuters, citing Pakistani sources, reported that Pakistan joined the United States and Iran in a trilateral meeting.
Reporters from U.S. outlets including CBS and NewsNation also confirmed the talks had begun.
An Iran state TV correspondent in Islamabad said a three-way meeting involving the U.S., Iran and Pakistan was underway.
NewsNation’s White House correspondent Kelly Mayer wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that she spoke with President Donald Trump and was told the negotiations had officially started.
Earlier in the day, both delegations met separately with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The talks come four days after the two sides abruptly agreed on a two-week cease-fire on the 7th. Delegates are expected to focus on steps to end the war, restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and address concerns about Iran’s nuclear program.
Other key issues include Iran’s demands for a halt to fighting in Lebanon, lifting sanctions and frozen assets, and compensation for war damages.
The U.S. delegation is led by Vice President J.D. Vance, who arrived that day.
Also traveling with the U.S. team are Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, and Steve Witkoff, the administration’s special envoy for the Middle East.
Tasnim reported the U.S. delegation numbers about 300 people, including security and protocol personnel.
Iran’s delegation, which arrived the previous day, includes Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Also on the Iranian side are Ali Akbar Ahmadian, secretary-general of the Supreme National Security Council, and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati, bringing the delegation to roughly 70 people.
