The Defense Acquisition Program Administration and the Korea Forest Service signed a memorandum of understanding on April 20 at the Forest Aviation Headquarters in Wonju, Gangwon Province, to apply advanced defense technologies to wildfire response systems. The pact directs the agencies to develop an artificial intelligence–based wildfire suppression support system to improve the firefighting capabilities of military helicopters. It also calls for technology and policy exchanges to implement coordinated, interagency wildfire-prevention measures and to modernize response operations, as well as cooperation on the procurement and fielding of wildfire suppression equipment.Since November of last year, the two organizations have been conducting research and development through a working-level consultative body on precision wildfire suppression concepts, including a Korea-specific wildfire defense system tentatively dubbed “Fire Dome.”Korea Forest Service Commissioner Park Eun-sik said the partnership aims to identify technologies and equipment that could significantly enhance wildfire response and expects the collaboration to expand into areas such as worker safety. Lee Yong-chul, head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, said applying advanced defense technologies to wildfire response can increase suppression efficiency and broaden civilian applications of those technologies. He added that the agency plans to extend defense technology into civilian sectors, including forestry, to help build a safer Korea.#DefenseAcquisitionAdministration #KoreaForestService #MOU #WildfireResponse #AdvancedDefenseTech Yonhap News TV inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23, Ji Seong-rim (yoonik@yna.co.kr)
