How AI-Driven Technologies are Revolutionizing Wildfire Response in South Korea

Translation result.20일 The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Korea Forest Service signed a memorandum of understanding on the 20th at the Forest Aviation Headquarters in Wonju, Gangwon Province to apply advanced defense technologies to wildfire response systems.

The agencies said they will move quickly to develop an AI-based wildfire suppression support system to improve the firefighting capabilities of military helicopters. They also plan to exchange technology and policy to implement joint government wildfire-prevention measures and to modernize wildfire response, and to cooperate on procuring and fielding firefighting equipment.

Since last November, the two organizations have been conducting research and development through a working group on precision wildfire-suppression measures, including a Korea-specific system tentatively named “Fire Dome.”

Park Eun-sik, commissioner of the Korea Forest Service, said, “We expect to identify technologies and equipment that can significantly improve wildfire response and to expand cooperation into areas such as firefighter safety.”

Lee Yong-cheol, DAPA’s administrator, emphasized that applying advanced defense technologies to wildfire response can increase suppression efficiency while expanding civilian applications of those capabilities. “We will promote defense technologies across forestry and other civilian sectors to help make Korea safer,” he said.
