Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has reportedly detained three vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the 22nd (local time), the Associated Press and other outlets reported the IRGC detained three vessels — including a container ship — transiting the Strait of Hormuz on suspicion of regulatory violations; the ships are now under investigation.
Iran says the vessels either passed through the strait without military permission or tampered with their Automatic Identification System (AIS).
Some outlets reported the IRGC fired on the vessels before detaining them, and the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) also reported attacks on ships in the same area.
It has not been independently confirmed whether the ships attacked reported by other sources are the same vessels Iran says it detained.
The detentions come amid stalled U.S.-Iran truce talks. They followed President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would extend the truce deadline and have heightened tensions over control of the strait.
