In Mali, Defense Minister Sadio Camara was killed following a major assault by armed groups that began on the 25th (local time).
On the 26th, Reuters reported that Camara was killed when JNIM (Jama’at Nasr al‑Islam wal Muslimin), an al‑Qaeda‑linked group, attacked his residence inside the Kati military base near the capital, Bamako. AFP reported a car bomb struck his home, killing Camara, his second wife and two grandchildren.
On the morning of the 25th, armed groups including JNIM and Tuareg separatists launched coordinated attacks across several areas, including Bamako. In a statement that afternoon, the Malian government said 16 civilians and soldiers were wounded but added that “the situation is fully under control in all areas.”
Mali has faced persistent instability since 2012 from jihadist groups linked to radical Islamist movements and from separatist factions. Two coups—in August 2020 and May 2021—brought a military government to power under Colonel Assimi Goita as interim president. Observers characterize this as the largest rebel attack against the junta to date.
UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric wrote on X that UN Secretary‑General António Guterres is deeply concerned about the attacks in Mali. “The Secretary‑General strongly condemns these acts of violence and is calling for international support to curb rising violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel and to meet urgent humanitarian needs,” he said.
