2026 AI Revolution: How South Korea’s Defense Ministry is Investing 400 Billion Won in Military Applications

Daniel Kim Views

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense has selected 20 defense projects to rapidly field commercial artificial intelligence across military units and will invest 40 billion KRW (30 million USD) through the end of 2026.

On the 30th, the ministry announced new defense-focused projects under its “AI Applied Products Rapid Commercialization Support Project.” The program aims to shorten adoption timelines by integrating AI technologies already developed or close to market in the private sector into defense systems. Rather than relying solely on in-house development, the military plans to leverage commercial tech to improve both operational capabilities and administrative efficiency.

The investments cover 20 projects across four areas: combat support, personnel reduction, defense operations efficiency, and cyber/security. The ministry said it prioritized projects with large potential gains from AI and clear prospects for practical military use. As force structures shift and the security environment grows more complex, organizations increasingly need to process more information with fewer people and automate repetitive tasks.

Highlighted projects include AI-integrated video command-and-control and analysis for surveillance operations, decision-support services for commanders, AI-based virtual- and mixed-reality anti-drone training simulators, and a 24-hour automated military civil affairs chatbot. The slate also includes initiatives in intelligence, medical care, logistics, and maintenance. That breadth shows AI is expanding beyond surveillance and weapons systems into training, rear-area support, and public-facing administration. Functions that have long relied on people performing repetitive, time-consuming work—such as image analysis, counseling, and maintenance support—are expected to realize AI gains relatively quickly.

The ministry plans to evaluate proposals, select implementing organizations for each project in June, and complete the program by the end of 2026. Jeon Jun-beom, director of the Defense AI Planning Bureau, said the ministry will continue to expand unit-level AI capabilities to accelerate building an AI-enabled advanced force. The move is likely to bring more private tech firms into the defense sector and speed the competition to adopt AI focused on force integration and operational efficiency.
