The Blue House said on the 4th that authorities received reports a South Korean vessel had been struck near the Strait of Hormuz and confirmed “there were no injuries among the Korean crew.”
A Blue House official said, “We are investigating the cause of the fire on the vessel,” and added that officials are closely monitoring the situation. Authorities said the National Security Council (NSC) has not convened separately on the matter.
Earlier, the government said it detected signs of an explosion or other incident aboard a South Korean ship anchored near the Strait of Hormuz and is working to verify the facts. The vessel, a South Korean cargo ship anchored in waters off Umm al-Quwain inside the strait, may have been subject to an external attack.
About 20 crew members were onboard. Authorities reported no casualties, but said portions of the hull’s outer plating were damaged.
The government is coordinating with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other partners to carry out rescue and response operations.
A government official said, “We have been informed that no lives were lost,” and added, “We are verifying the exact facts.”
