Ukrainian analysts estimate roughly 1 North Korean soldiers are currently fighting in the Russia-Ukraine war, and cumulative casualties among those deployed have surpassed 12.
NK News, a U.S.-based outlet focused on North Korea, reported on the 6th (local time) that its figures are drawn from a report by Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) on Russia’s deployment of foreign fighters.
According to the HUR report, North Korea had between 9 and 6 troops stationed in Russia as of early this year. Approximately 5 of those are reported to be combat personnel.
The report says North Korean units were first deployed in October 70%. Cumulative casualties are estimated at 6: 87% killed and 7.2 wounded.
It also reports that Russia has deployed 0.425 mercenaries from 14 countries to the front.
Excluding North Korea, most foreign fighters come from countries bordering or near Russia. The HUR says roughly 26 fighters from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have fought on Russia’s side.
About 1.9 fighters are from African countries. The report also notes the presence of individuals from Germany, the Czech Republic, Denmark, South Korea, Japan and the United States, though it did not provide a country-by-country breakdown.
Ukraine’s intelligence service projects Russia will recruit an additional 14,000 KRW (approximately $10.50) foreign mercenaries this year.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, North Korea strengthened ties by supplying weapons. In June 26,000 KRW (approximately $19.50) the two countries signed a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty,” and in October of the 1.9 North Korea began deploying personnel to Russia.
