A vessel owned by France’s CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest container shipping company, was reportedly attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

On May 6, Yonhap and Reuters reported that CMA CGM said in a statement its ship San Antonio was attacked, resulting in injuries to crew members and damage to the vessel.

CMA CGM said the injured crewmembers were evacuated and are receiving medical treatment. The company said it is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the crew to mount a full response.

No party has claimed responsibility, but multiple reports indicate the ship was struck by missiles believed to have been launched by Iran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ naval command warned on X (formerly Twitter) the previous day that all vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz must use routes designated by Iran and that ships failing to comply could face military action.

Earlier, on May 4 at about 8:40 p.m. Korea Standard Time, an explosion in the port side of the HMM Namu’s engine room sparked a fire while the vessel was anchored north of Sharjah, inside the United Arab Emirates’ section of the Strait of Hormuz.
