The government said the fire aboard the South Korean freighter was caused by a strike from an unidentified aerial object in the Strait of Hormuz on May 4.
On May 10, the Foreign Ministry released the findings of a joint government investigation.
The Foreign Ministry said investigators concluded that on May 4 an unidentified aerial object struck the stern of the HMM Namu. It said limitations prevented confirming the object’s exact type and size and that officials will conduct additional analysis of debris recovered from the scene.
On May 4, an explosion aboard the HMM Namu, which was anchored in the Strait of Hormuz, ignited a fire. There were no casualties.
The government towed the Namu to the Port of Dubai and dispatched a team to investigate. Some observers pointed to Iran as responsible, but Iran’s embassy in Seoul denied that the Islamic Republic’s military was involved.
