What Caused the HMM ‘Namuhho’ Explosion? Unraveling the Mystery of the Attack

Daniel Kim Views

Translation result외교부가 On May 10, the government said an unidentified aerial object struck the HMM Namoo, triggering an explosion aboard the South Korean vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. The presidential office, known as the Blue House, convened a National Security Council (NSC) working committee that included the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and other relevant agencies.

However, the Blue House disclosed no further details. A spokesperson said, “We cannot disclose the specifics of the meeting.”

Earlier, the Foreign Ministry said, “Our investigation confirmed that on May 4 an unidentified aerial object struck the stern of the HMM Namoo.” The ministry added that two unknown aerial objects struck the ship, damaging the port-side stern outer plating across an area of about 5 meters (roughly 16.4 feet) and penetrating about 7 meters (roughly 23.0 feet) into the hull. Investigators found internal frames bent inward while the hull plating bulged and bent outward. The ministry said it could not determine whether the attack was carried out by Iranian systems such as the Shahed drone, which can alter explosive effects by changing warheads.

Addressing reports that Iran’s ambassador visited the Foreign Ministry immediately after the findings were released, the ministry said, “Because Iran is a country related to this incident, the Iranian ambassador visited our offices to receive an explanation of the investigation’s findings.” It added, “We are communicating with relevant countries based on the facts confirmed so far, and the government will take necessary measures going forward.”
