Iran War: Over 228 U.S. Military Assets Hit—What This Means for Defense Strategies

An analysis found Iran struck at least 228 U.S. military assets across the Middle East during the conflict with Iran. Key systems, including a THAAD radar, sustained damage. Analysts say U.S. forces underestimated Iran’s strike capabilities and revealed weaknesses in base defenses.

On May 6 (local time), The Washington Post reviewed satellite imagery from the war period — from Feb. 28, when the conflict began, through the 14th of last month — and published its findings. The Post reported the damage appears far greater than counts compiled by the U.S. government and other sources.

The Post’s analysis found 217 structures at 15 U.S. bases in the region were destroyed and 11 additional targets were struck, including communications facilities, Patriot missile systems and power plants. Among the affected assets were a THAAD radar deployed in Jordan and a U.S. E-3 Sentry AWACS at a Saudi air base.

Experts argue U.S. forces underestimated Iran’s strike proficiency and were slow to adapt to drone warfare, exposing vulnerabilities in fixed-base defenses.

Kelly Grieco, a senior researcher at the Stimson Center, criticized U.S. assessments for underestimating the sophistication of Iran’s targeting of fixed U.S. facilities and for not fully accounting for interceptor missile inventories. Decker Ibless, a research analyst at the Naval Analysis Center, said Iran’s drone strikes may not inflict catastrophic damage individually, but they are harder to intercept and more precise, creating a serious threat to U.S. forces.

The U.S. military urged caution in interpreting the imagery, saying some effects could stem from Iranian deception operations. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) declined to provide detailed responses to The Post, saying evaluations of base damage are complex and can sometimes be misleading.
