[CBC News] On May 17 (local time), Russian President Vladimir Putin described the successful test launch of the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as \”a momentous event in history.\”

State-run TASS reported that Putin made the comment after receiving a military briefing on the test-launch results for the RS-28 Sarmat.

On May 12, the Russian military released footage of the Sarmat launch and announced the test had succeeded.

The Sarmat, known to NATO as \”Satan 2,\” is a new ICBM that Russian officials say can carry about 10 nuclear warheads. They claim it has an estimated range of about 35,000 km (roughly 21,750 miles) and significantly improved accuracy, and assert it can defeat virtually any air-defense network.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the same day, \”Nuclear deterrence is the foundation and an essential element of national security,\” adding, \”Nuclear-armed states cannot be targets of threats.\” He reiterated that nuclear weapons are viewed as a means to guarantee a nation’s survival.
