Daniel Kim Views

Translation resultPractical workshop on AI security heldThe South Korean government is accelerating efforts to harness artificial intelligence (AI) to counter rising security threats, a push driven in part by the so‑called “Mitos shock.” After initial engagement with Anthropic, officials have moved to establish a cybersecurity partnership with OpenAI.The Ministry of Science and ICT said it hosted a practical workshop on AI security with OpenAI on the 18th. Delegations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Intelligence Service, the Financial Services Commission, the National AI Strategy Committee, the AI Safety Research Institute, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the Financial Security Institute also attended.Sasha Baker, OpenAI’s head of national security policy, briefed Korean government officials on the Trust-Based Cyber Approach program (TAC) and demonstrated key cybersecurity capabilities in the latest AI models. “In the AI era, close public‑private cooperation is essential to respond effectively to cyber threats,” she said. “When governments, companies, infrastructure operators, research institutions, and AI firms cooperate with a shared sense of responsibility, we can use AI safely and strengthen cyber resilience.”The Ministry requested that OpenAI share information and cooperate on AI security threats. Both sides agreed to continue working-level discussions on how AI models can be applied in cybersecurity. The ministry also held a meeting with Anthropic and relevant agencies on the 11th to discuss AI‑cybersecurity collaboration.Choi Woo‑hyeok, director of the Information Protection and Network Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “AI must be a tool for defenders, not attackers. We reached consensus on the need for close public‑private cooperation to address AI security threats. The ministry will continue to bolster domestic AI security capabilities through active cooperation and ongoing working-level talks with global AI companies.”
