Korean Military’s Taeguk Exercise: Enhancing Crisis Management Against North Korean Threats

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said May 15 they will conduct the Taeguk Exercise, a Republic of Korea–only command-post drill led by the JCS, from May 18–22.
The exercise will use scenarios that reflect changes in the security environment and recent patterns of warfare.
The JCS said the exercise is intended to further strengthen the ROK military’s crisis-response capabilities against a range of threats from North Korea.
The Taeguk Exercise traces back to the 1996 \”Amnok River\” drill and adopted its current name in 2004. It was merged with the government-run Ulchi exercise in 2019 to form the Ulchi–Taeguk Exercise, but the two were separated again in 2022.
