The Financial Times reported on the 10th (local time) that Germany has resumed efforts to buy Tomahawk cruise missiles after the United States abandoned plans to station a Tomahawk unit in Germany. Sources say Berlin is pressing the Donald Trump administration to approve the sale of Tomahawk missiles and a Typhoon ground-launch system. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius plans to visit Washington to press the case.Germany first signaled interest in purchasing the weapons in July of last year, but U.S. officials did not respond, according to the report. Former President Joe Biden had pledged at the 2024 NATO summit to deploy U.S. mid- and long-range missiles, including Tomahawks, to Germany. The Pentagon later shelved the missile deployment as part of a broader plan to reduce U.S. forces in Germany, the Wall Street Journal and other outlets reported earlier this month. One source told the FT that Berlin may be prepared to pay a premium to secure a deal. After public strains developed between President Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the recent war in Iran, German officials reportedly hope a more transactional approach could persuade Washington to approve an arms sale. The FT also noted that Pistorius may not be guaranteed a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during his Washington visit.#Germany #UnitedStates #Tomahawk Yonhap News TV inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/Line jebo23 Choi Jin-kyung (highjean@yna.co.kr)
