52 US Tankers Mass at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport: Is an Iran Strike Imminent?

Daniel Kim Views

US tankers mass at Ben Gurion — 52 now as force buildup coincides with stalled talksSatellite imagery indicates the U.S. has concentrated aerial refueling tankers — a core enabler for long-range strike operations — at Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport. Analysts say the deployment appears to be a precaution in case strikes against Iran resume. The Financial Times reported on the 22nd (local time) that satellite analysis shows at least 50 U.S. refueling aircraft parked at Ben Gurion, Israel’s largest civilian aviation hub near Tel Aviv. The number of tankers at the airport has risen steadily since late February, when U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran looked imminent. In early March there were 36 tankers, the count climbed to 47 around an early-April cease-fire, and this week analysts recorded 52.The FT said gray U.S. Air Force aircraft now fill the airport apron and are readily visible to passengers and drivers on nearby roads.Aerial refueling lets fighter aircraft extend their range and loiter time, making tankers indispensable for long-distance strike missions. U.S. KC-135 and KC-46 tankers supported long-range missions across the Middle East during past operations such as “Operation Magnificent Anger,” and analysts view the current deployments as a forward precaution against potential future strikes on Iran.Washington and Tehran continue end-of-war negotiations, but President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he will not entirely rule out military options. If talks stall, some analysts warn the U.S. and Israel could quickly resume strikes on Iran. The FT also reported growing concern inside Israel that Ben Gurion is functioning increasingly like a U.S. military base. The influx of military aircraft has squeezed parking space for civilian carriers, forcing some airlines to relocate to foreign airports to wait.
