As debates over U.S. force realignments in Europe intensify and calls for greater strategic autonomy grow, France, the U.K. and Germany are preparing to coordinate on a long-range missile program. The Financial Times reported May 22, citing multiple sources, that France has told Britain and Germany it will join their talks on the new initiative. The program, dubbed “Deep Precision Strike,” aims to develop an advanced conventional missile system with a range exceeding 2,000 km (about 1,243 miles). A weapon with that range would enable European forces to strike deep into Russian territory without relying on U.S. support.Today, Europe’s conventional missile inventory is limited to roughly 300 km (about 186 miles) ranges. Using those systems to strike Russian targets would require European aircraft or warships to enter contested airspace or waters, increasing operational risk.France announced in March that it would bolster Europe’s security umbrella, and its decision to join the missile effort appears aimed at strengthening conventional deterrence through indigenous strike capabilities. The Deep Precision Strike initiative began in 2024 and remains in its early stages. The U.K. and Germany have agreed the program should explore stealth cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons, with an initial emphasis on land-based launchers. Participating defense firms include European missile maker MBDA and the Anglo-German startup Hypersonica. France has proposed bringing in ArianeGroup, the company that builds ballistic missiles tied to its nuclear deterrent.French officials expect that joining the project will accelerate development, with a goal of fielding an operational system in the early 2030s. The three governments are reportedly considering a trilateral meeting in early next month to advance cooperation.#France #U.K. #Germany #Missiles #DeepPrecisionStrikeYonhap TV — For news tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23 Choi Jin-kyung (highjean@yna.co.kr)
