Google has agreed to let the U.S. Department of Defense use its Gemini artificial intelligence model for classified work, despite opposition from hundreds of its employees. The Wall Street Journal and The Information, citing sources, reported on April 28 that Google signed a contract allowing the Defense Department to deploy the company’s Gemini model on classified tasks. The agreement permits the Defense Department to use Google’s AI for “any lawful purpose” and obliges Google to adjust AI safety settings if the government requests it. The contract also includes a provision in which both parties agree the system will not—and must not—be used for large-scale domestic surveillance or for autonomous weapons without appropriate human oversight and control. Additionally, the agreement specifies that it does not give the government the authority to control or veto lawful operational decisions. Earlier, roughly 600 Google employees sent an open letter to CEO Sundar Pichai urging him not to provide the AI model for the Defense Department’s classified operations, but their appeal did not prevent the deal. #Google #AI #DoD #War Yonhap TV inquiries and tips: KakaoTalk/Line jebo23 Yoon Hyung-seop (yhs931@yna.co.kr)
