France Deploys Nuclear Aircraft Carrier to Red Sea Amid Iran Conflict

Translation result에마뉘엘 [Herald Economy = Reporter Doh Hyun-jung] France has moved its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to the Red Sea, saying the deployment will help ensure ships can transit the Strait of Hormuz safely once the war involving Iran ends.In a statement on the 6th (local time), the French Defense Ministry said the Charles de Gaulle carrier strike group — which had been positioned in the eastern Mediterranean since late February after the outbreak of hostilities with Iran to support regional allies — is being redeployed to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. The ministry said the carrier strike group transited the Suez Canal and is now bound for the southern Red Sea. Officials described the move as a way to shorten the response time needed to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz once fighting ceases. The Defense Ministry emphasized that France is not a direct party to the conflict, that it acts in accordance with international law and respects all sovereign rights, and that the carrier’s redeployment should reassure maritime trade stakeholders.Paris has resisted U.S. pressure to send additional warships to assert control in the Strait. Instead, France — together with the United Kingdom — has taken the lead on a multinational effort to guarantee post-conflict freedom of navigation. French officials have insisted the United States, as a party to the fighting, should be excluded from that multinational task force. As Iran’s control of the strait and the prospect of a U.S. maritime blockade complicated the situation, France proposed to both Washington and Tehran that the Hormuz issue be handled separately from other disputes and negotiations. An Élysée Palace official said, “We can allow Iranian tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz,” but added that Tehran must engage in negotiations on the core nuclear issues the United States demands. The official also urged Washington to lift any maritime blockade and to recognize Iran’s willingness to negotiate on substantive matters.President Emmanuel Macron posted on X, formerly Twitter, that “the multinational task force formed by France and the U.K. can help restore shipowners’ and insurers’ confidence,” and that the task force will operate independently of the parties to the fighting. He said the pre-deployment of the Charles de Gaulle was made in that context.Macron said he spoke by phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and urged him to seize the diplomatic opportunity. He added he plans to discuss the issue with U.S. President Donald Trump. Macron argued that restoring calm in the Strait of Hormuz would support progress on negotiations over nuclear, ballistic missile and regional issues and that European states holding leverage over sanctions relief must play their part.
