In the wake of the conflict in the Middle East, tankers bound for South Korea have begun arriving after rerouting through the Red Sea to avoid the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping industry sources say the third and fourth South Korean tankers to transit the Red Sea since the Strait of Hormuz was blocked arrived on the 29th, each carrying roughly 2 million barrels of crude oil. They berthed at Daesan Port and Ulsan Port, respectively. A separate tanker transited the Red Sea on the 23rd and is scheduled to arrive in South Korea next month. The Red Sea has become a primary operating area for the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. In some of the higher-risk stretches, the Republic of Korea Navy’s Cheonghae Unit has escorted commercial vessels to provide protection.
