U.S. Strikes Target Iranian Drone Facilities Amid Rising Tensions

As U.S.-Iran ceasefire talks entered a rocky stretch, the U.S. military said it carried out additional strikes on facilities inside Iran over the weekend.

U.S. Central Command announced on X (formerly Twitter) on June 1 (local time) that it conducted defensive strikes this past weekend against Iranian radar and drone-control facilities on Goruk and Qeshm Island.

CENTCOM said the operation took place May 30–31. The command called the strikes a deliberate, measured response to Iran’s aggressive actions, including the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone that was operating in international airspace.

According to CENTCOM, U.S. warplanes responded swiftly, degrading Iran’s air defenses and ground-control sites and destroying two one-way attack drones that posed a clear threat to regional shipping. No U.S. personnel were injured.

Central Command emphasized it will continue to protect U.S. assets and interests against any unjustified Iranian attacks during the ceasefire period.

Iran, meanwhile, had earlier claimed it shot down a U.S. military drone. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on May 29 that Iran’s military downed a U.S. unmanned aerial vehicle over Bushehr Province in the south.

Local Iranian outlets said Tehran fired a surface-to-air missile in southern waters near the Strait of Hormuz, bringing the drone down.

But CENTCOM disputed those claims at the time on X, saying, “No U.S. aircraft were shot down,” and that all U.S. aerial assets had been accounted for.
