[DeGuru=Reporter Oh So-young] LIG Defense & Aerospace (LIG D&A) visited NORAD’s Canadian regional headquarters and met with senior military leaders to discuss security cooperation for defending North American airspace and the Arctic. The visit also supports Hanwha Ocean’s bid for Canada’s Next-Generation Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP) as LIG expands its local defense network.
On the 27th, the Samuel Group said a LIG D&A delegation led by Jang Young-hwan, head of Overseas Business Unit 5, visited NORAD’s Canadian regional headquarters in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Goran Samuel Pesic, CEO of Canadian consulting firm Samuel Group, accompanied the delegation.
NORAD is a binational military organization established by the United States and Canada in 1957. It provides aerospace warning and control as well as maritime warning missions and is headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado. The Canadian regional headquarters the delegation visited is responsible for monitoring and controlling Canadian airspace.
That day the delegation met with Chris McKenna, commander of NORAD’s Canadian region and commander of 1 Canadian Air Division. Discussions centered on defending the North American continent and the Arctic, modernizing NORAD, and pursuing defense-industry cooperation to strengthen security.

LIG D&A has broadened its engagement across the Canadian government, military and industry as it pursues the Canadian market. Late last year, it met GeoSpectrum Technologies Inc., a developer of underwater acoustic detection systems, to discuss submarine-related cooperation. In March, the two companies formalized their partnership at Hanwha Ocean’s CPSP Partners Day.
Recently, LIG D&A brought on Jamie Baillie, former leader of Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative Party, as an advisory partner. With the Canadian submarine contract in mind, the company is exploring a local torpedo production facility and is considering Nova Scotia as a potential site.
