The U.S. Space Force has tapped SpaceX to build the core communications backbone for its next-generation airborne missile-defense system, known as Golden Dome.
Reuters reported on May 26 that the Space Force signed a 3.4 trillion KRW (approximately $2.55 billion) contract with SpaceX.
The contract calls for a high-speed satellite communications network to connect military sensors and weapons platforms deployed worldwide. The network will integrate detection systems and interceptor assets into a single architecture so collected data can be shared more quickly.
The work specifically includes construction of the Space Data Network (SDN) backbone. The SDN backbone is designed to carry large volumes of military data with low latency and to route missile-warning and tracking information to interceptor systems in near real time.
Officials say the communications pathway is a central element of the Golden Dome concept advanced under the Trump administration. Golden Dome seeks to fuse air- and space-based surveillance and interception capabilities to counter missile threats. SpaceX plans to deliver an SDN prototype capable of full operation by the end of next year.
Col. Ryan Fraser, the program manager for the effort, said, “The SDN backbone will leverage commercial technologies to underpin the military’s data-transmission missions.”
