Iran Claims Strike on U.S. Military Bases—CENTCOM Hits Back

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it struck major U.S. military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. operations in the Middle East, immediately dismissed the claim, saying the Iranian strikes failed.

On June 2 local time, Reuters, AFP and other outlets reported the IRGC told state media it struck the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and a U.S. Air Force base in Kuwait with missiles and drones.

Shortly after Iran’s announcement, CENTCOM posted on X (formerly Twitter) that “claims Iran struck U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and U.S. air bases in the region are false,” and added that “all of Iran’s attacks against U.S. forces failed.”

CENTCOM said U.S. forces remain on alert and are prepared to defend against what it called Iran’s unjust aggression. It said that, together with Bahraini forces, they intercepted three missiles launched by Iran.

The command added that missiles fired toward Kuwait either failed to reach their targets and crashed or broke up in flight.

CENTCOM also said U.S. forces shot down three attack drones Iran launched at civilian vessels legally transiting regional waters. In response to the attacks, the U.S. carried out airstrikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island.

CENTCOM said the strikes targeted an “Iranian military ground control facility” on Qeshm Island and reported there were no U.S. casualties. Qeshm is Iran’s largest island in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for oil and gas shipments in the Gulf.
