By Kim Yang-geun, Inews24 — Jeongeup, a city in North Jeolla Province, placed its bike rental program under direct municipal management in April. In the roughly one-month period that followed, the service recorded 3,571 rentals, signaling a sharp uptick in demand.

Jeongeup City said that over a 31-day span from April into May, riders checked out a total of 3,571 bikes. On May 5 — Children’s Day — the service hit a single-day peak of 556 rentals, the highest since the program reopened under municipal operation.

City officials largely attribute the surge to the Miracle Playground inside Naejangsan Cultural Plaza, completed last September. The new attraction has drawn many family outings, which in turn drove a sharp rise in demand for rental bikes.

To reduce inconvenience as ridership grows, the city has stepped up on-site management. Because weekend and holiday traffic concentrates at more than 20 times weekday levels, officials are reviewing staffing plans to streamline ticketing as well as rental and return procedures.

A city official said, “We are conducting facility inspections and reinforcing safety measures so visitors to Naejangsan Cultural Plaza can ride safely and enjoyably. We will continue to listen to residents and work to create a more pleasant environment for cycling.”

The city also carries out regular equipment inspections to prevent accidents caused by worn bicycles. It runs helmet-awareness campaigns and is working to promote a culture of safety among riders.
