[EPN] BTS is set to make a triumphant return as a full group following their military service. The K-pop sensation has announced plans to promote their new album, “Arirang,” which puts a spotlight on Korean cultural identity.

Slated for release on March 20, “Arirang” marks the group’s first album since their military hiatus. The septet is scheduled to stage a performance featuring their new tracks at Seoul’s iconic Gwanghwamun Square on March 21. In an unprecedented move, they’ve sought permission to utilize spaces around Gyeongbokgung Palace, including Gyeongjeongmun and Heungnyemun gates, as well as the Gwanghwamun steps for this grand event.

The centerpiece of this performance will be an innovative stage design inspired by the “King’s Road,” a concept rooted in the paths trodden by Joseon Dynasty monarchs. The choice of Gwanghwamun as the venue, a location that symbolically bridges Korea’s rich tradition with its modern present, elevates this comeback to more than just a musical return.

The album’s title, “Arirang,” pays homage to Korea’s most iconic folk song, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. BTS leader RM previously shared during a live broadcast, “All seven of us wanted to embody Korea, capturing its emotions and cultural essence.”

While BTS has previously spearheaded K-pop’s global dominance with English-language hits like “Dynamite,” “Butter,” and “Permission to Dance,” this comeback marks a significant shift towards embracing their Korean roots. The decision to prominently showcase their heritage in their first post-military service album is particularly noteworthy.

This strategic move, which aims to forge a new identity through the symbolic space of Gwanghwamun and the culturally rich “Arirang,” is being interpreted as BTS evolving from mere cultural ambassadors to embodiments of Korean culture itself.

The group’s domestic fanbase is ecstatic about BTS’s full return and the symbolic weight of the Gwanghwamun location, with many exclaiming, “They’re finally back!” International ARMY members are equally enthused, embracing the comeback concept that intertwines Korean traditions with modern artistry, and eagerly anticipating live broadcasts and global promotional activities.

All eyes are now on BTS as industry insiders and fans alike speculate on the potential cultural impact and shifts their new endeavor, centered around the historic Gwanghwamun and the evocative “Arirang,” will bring to the global music landscape.
