[Sports Today reporter Yoon Hye-young] “I think we’ve returned to the place we were always meant to be.”
The trailer for the documentary about BTS’s fifth studio album, ARIRANG, was released on the group’s official social channels at 8 a.m. on March 17.
The preview for the film BTS: THE RETURN traces the band’s past, present and future. It cuts between footage from the recent world tour, moments around members’ military discharges, and songwriting sessions in Los Angeles where the group worked on new material.
Members reflect candidly on the pressure to evolve. “Trends change and we can’t keep doing the same things,” one says. “If we want to make a change, there’s no time but now.” They also revisit their roots, noting, “We still feel like small‑town guys from Korea,” a line that dovetails with the album’s central theme of returning to origin. Scenes of the band enjoying ordinary days prompt questions about how their current emotions and everyday inspirations will influence the new music.
The trailer notably layers the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang” under the visuals, lending the film a quiet, emotional resonance. The melody accompanies narration — “I think we’ve returned to the place we were always meant to be,” and “Could this be a scene only we can create?” — building anticipation for the group’s next chapter. Watching all seven members gather to brainstorm, record and film further stokes excitement for their upcoming activities.
BTS: THE RETURN premieres on Netflix on the 27th. Director Bao Nguyen — whose Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop earned a 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Music Film and three Primetime Creative Arts Emmy nominations — helms the project.
