[Sports Today reporter Lim Si-ryeong] Singer Kim Jang-hoon spoke candidly about youthful rebellion and explained why he left high school.
On March 17, the YouTube channel Song Seung-hwan’s Wonderful Life uploaded Episode 2, titled \”Singer Kim Jang-hoon: Tumultuous School Years — Why He Dropped Out of High School.\”
In the episode, Kim revealed he grew up without a father. \”I didn’t have a father from birth; I thought he had died,\” he said, describing a childhood marked by absence.
He said those lonely, difficult school years pushed him toward rebellion. He was active in school clubs and recalled that roughly 24 graduates from his high school went on to Seoul National University. \”Even though I crammed and ranked around fifth,\” he said, before explaining why he ultimately left school.
He recalled one incident from his freshman year in which a classmate who couldn’t pay tuition was slapped during gym class. \”I started trembling. I can’t stand to see people bullied by force,\” he said.
He added that two men once visited his relatively well-off home to teach them hwatu, a Korean card game. \”It felt like they came to win my money, but they ended up losing it,\” he said. Kim admitted that, as high school students, they once took school tuition money and gambled on hwatu at a Chinese restaurant. The restaurant owner called the police, the school contacted his family, and the incident ultimately led to his decision to drop out.
He also said street fights were common. \”There was once a fight that pitted four against twenty,\” he recalled. \”It was a dangerous moment.\” While he tried to avoid the confrontation, they watched a body float down the Han River — an image that, he said, effectively ended the conflict and left viewers stunned.
