The ‘2026 Daejeon Indie Forum’ convened on the 18th at the Daejeon Music Creation Center performance hall to assess the health and challenges of the local indie music scene.

The forum, co-hosted by the Daejeon Indie Music Association, Daejeon Chamber Hall and the Daejeon Music Creation Center, centered on structural issues within the regional indie ecosystem and explored strategies for sustainable growth.

Park Hong-sun, president of the Daejeon Indie Music Association, said, \”There are more students majoring in applied music and more indie musicians, but performance venues and support for creative work remain insufficient. Local festivals still favor big-name acts, which leaves fewer stages for hometown artists.\”

Panelists called for long-term investment in performance infrastructure, the cultivation of a year-round club scene and stronger, creator-driven self-reliance.

Shim Ye-seo, CEO of Daejeon Chamber Hall, argued that artists need to be more business-savvy, considering distribution and audience engagement as well as creation. Kim Jong-gun, director of the Busan Minrak Indie Training Center, pointed to Busan’s experience and stressed that venues, education and platforms must be developed together to revive a local music scene.

After the forum, bands from Daejeon and Busan performed, underscoring the potential for regional indie music exchange.
