The Daegu Culture and Arts Center will present a recital by pianist Baek Geon-woo marking the 70th anniversary of his debut. The concert will take place Thursday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Palgong Hall.

Often described as \”a seeker at the keyboard,\” Baek will distill his decades-long career into a program built around works by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms. With a Schubert album slated for release in 2026, audiences can expect especially thoughtful and probing interpretations.

Baek made his debut at age 10 in 1956, performing with an orchestra, and has spent more than half a century on major international stages. He won prizes at distinguished competitions, including the Ferruccio Busoni and Naumburg contests, and has performed at venues such as Lincoln Center. His complete cycle of Beethoven piano sonatas and recordings of all the Prokofiev concertos are among his landmark achievements.

The recital offers a layered exploration of Romantic expression. It opens with Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 13 in A major, D.664, and continues with Brahms’s Four Ballades, Op. 10—works that balance lyric warmth with reflective intensity.

After intermission, Baek will play Schubert’s late masterpiece, Piano Sonata No. 20 in A major, D.959. The sonata’s expansive architecture weaves together lyricism, passion, introspection and joy, concentrating the musical depth of the composer’s late years and promising a deeply immersive experience for both performer and audience.

By threading Schubert’s early and late works with Brahms’s inward-facing sound world, the program traces an arc from purity to contemplation, allowing listeners to take in the full emotional range of Romantic music in a single evening. Tickets are 70,000 KRW (approximately $52.50) for R seats, 50,000 KRW (approximately $37.50) for S seats, and 30,000 KRW (approximately $22.50) for A seats. The concert is suitable for elementary-school children and older. Inquiries: 053-430-7667~8.
