Experience the Magic of Debussy and Ravel: Choi Hyung-sik’s Solo Piano Recital in Seoul

Translation result.

Pianist Choi Hyung-sik will give a solo recital devoted to French piano repertoire, centering on the layered soundscapes of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel.

The program pairs Debussy’s Images Book 1 and Book 2, with Ravel’s Gaspard de la Nuit and La Valse. Taken together, the works illuminate Impressionist color, modern sonorities and the intricate sonic imagination that shaped early 20th-century French piano music.

Choi began piano lessons at seven and trained at Deokwon Arts High School before graduating with honors from Chugye University for the Arts. He continued his studies in Germany with Markus Stange at the Karlsruhe University of Music, earning both a master’s degree and a Konzertexamen with unanimous highest distinction.

He has won prizes at competitions including the Città di Barletta International Competition and the Ho Chi Minh International Piano Competition, and has gained orchestral experience through concerto appearances in Korea.

Contemporary music remains central to Choi’s artistic identity. During his time in Germany he researched and performed modern repertoire and participated in contemporary-music festivals and special projects.

He took part in concerts marking the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth and performed in recital series and chamber-music programs across Germany.

The first half of the recital highlights Debussy’s Images, beginning with “Reflets dans l’eau,” “Hommage à Rameau” and “Mouvement” from Book 1. These pieces translate reflections, light and motion into fluid piano textures and subtle rhythmic gestures.

Book 2 continues with “Cloches à travers les feuilles,” “Et la lune descend sur le temple qui fut” and “Poissons d’or,” showcasing Debussy’s painterly imagination and his refined handling of resonance and atmosphere.

The second half centers on two major works by Ravel. “Gaspard de la Nuit” unfolds through the fantastical visions of “Ondine,” “Le Gibet” and “Scarbo,” combining staggering virtuosity with precise sonic architecture.

The program closes with “La Valse,” in which the elegance of the Viennese waltz slowly fractures into tension and collapse, ending the evening on an intense, dramatic note.

The performance will take place May 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Kumho Art Hall Yonsei.
