Dalseo Arts Center (DSAC) will present the third program in its DSAC Signature Series: a recital by internationally acclaimed pianist Yekwon Sunwoo on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m. in Cheongryong Hall.

Yekwon Sunwoo first drew global attention when he became the first Korean to win the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017. Since then he has performed with leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the Munich Philharmonic and has appeared at major venues including Carnegie Hall and Wigmore Hall. He holds the record for the most international competition victories among Korean pianists, has topped Billboard’s classical chart, and has steadily built a distinguished career. With depth of musicianship and nuanced interpretation, he is widely regarded as a defining voice in contemporary piano performance.

The program, titled Song and Drama as Expressed by the Piano, emphasizes musical substance over sheer virtuosity. Drawing on the recital form shaped by Liszt, Sunwoo will offer his own readings of how the piano can sing like the human voice and unfold dramatic narrative.

In the first half, he will explore lyrical lines and interior monologues in Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 20, one of the composer’s late sonatas. In the second half, Sunwoo will tackle concentrated masterpieces by Liszt — including the Rigoletto Paraphrase, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, and Mephisto Waltz No. 1 — delivering dramatic storytelling and intense energy.

The DSAC Signature Series is Dalseo Arts Center’s flagship season, inviting top domestic and international artists and presenting high-caliber programs. After this recital, the series continues with Rafał Blechacz in July, the winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition in September, and Mao Fujita in October.

R seats: 80,000 KRW (approximately $60), S seats: 60,000 KRW (approximately $45). Recommended for elementary school students and older. Inquiries: 053-584-8719, 8720
