Daejeon Philharmonic’s Master Series: A Deep Dive into Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 on May 14

The Daejeon Municipal Symphony Orchestra will present Masters Series No. 5 — Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 — at 7:30 p.m. on the 14th in the Art Hall of the Daejeon Arts Center.

Belgian conductor David Railand will guest-conduct, with Daejeon Symphony concertmaster Kim Pil-gyun appearing as soloist.

Railand is a former artistic director of the National Symphony Orchestra and currently serves as music director of the Metz National Orchestra in France and as principal guest conductor of the Lausanne Sinfonietta in Switzerland. He is widely recognized at home for his nuanced, exacting interpretations.

The first half opens with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, featuring Kim Pil-gyun, whose steady technique and subtle phrasing have become a fixture of the orchestra’s performances.

The second half spotlights Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C major, Op. 61 — a work that traces Schumann’s inward struggles and eventual triumph, noted for its tightly woven structure and deep emotional range.

A Daejeon Symphony official said the collaboration with the internationally known conductor should deliver a focused program that resonates deeply with the audience.
