Former Changwon Deputy Mayor Jo Myung-rae, a member of the People Power Party, has officially announced his candidacy for the Changwon mayoral election on June 3. This comes despite ongoing legal proceedings against him for allegedly raising illegal political funds totaling hundreds of millions of won during the June 1, 2022 local elections.

At a press conference held on the 10th in the Changwon City Hall press room, Jo declared, “I am announcing my candidacy for mayor to shape Changwon’s future for the next century, moving from integration to coexistence. I aim to take significant steps forward alongside our one million citizens.”

Jo outlined his campaign promises, which include relocating Changwon City Hall to Masan Marine New Town, comprehensively revising the district unit plan, advocating for the relocation of Jinhae Education Command, implementing a citizen-recommended open recruitment system for district heads, establishing the Changwon Youth Foundation, and pursuing the development of a medical school.

Addressing his legal challenges, Jo asserted, “I stand by the presumption of innocence. This case stems from a smear campaign by dissatisfied elements within the camp who sought to undermine the deputy mayor’s position.” He expressed confidence that these issues would not impede his ability to govern effectively.

When questioned about the potential impact of prolonged trials on his administrative duties, Jo responded, “There will be absolutely no interference. I can easily manage court appearances through personal time off, including vacation days.”

Jo, along with former Mayor Hong Nam-pyo, is currently standing trial for allegedly receiving illegal political contributions totaling 353 million KRW (approximately $265,000 USD) from 12 local construction contractors. These funds were reportedly channeled through two election camp associates in 21 separate instances leading up to the June 1 elections. After three pre-trial hearings, the first full trial is scheduled for the 16th of next month.

To substantiate the charges, prosecutors have requested testimony from over 50 witnesses. The court has indicated it will conduct hearings two to three times per month. Both Jo and former Mayor Hong steadfastly deny all allegations against them.
