The Democratic Party of Korea is facing renewed controversy over its leadership’s connections to the ‘Sangbangwool network’ following the appointment of attorney Seo Min-seok as the special legal advisor to party leader Jeong Cheong-rae. This comes on the heels of the party’s recent backlash for recommending attorney Jeon Jun-cheol, who has a history of representing former Sangbangwool Chairman Kim Seong-tae, as a candidate for the second comprehensive special investigation. Critics argue that these moves are unnecessarily escalating tensions within the government-party relationship.

Political insiders and media reports on the 10th revealed that Jeong appointed Seo as his special legal advisor on January 29. Seo’s background is notable, as he previously represented Lee Hwa-young, the former Peace Deputy Governor of Gyeonggi Province, who was a central figure in the ‘Sangbangwool North Korea remittance case.’ Seo’s involvement in Lee’s defense team during a period when Lee made potentially damaging court statements about President Lee Jae-myung has now come under scrutiny.

In a recent press conference with the Cheongju City Hall reporters, Seo alluded to his connection with Jeong, stating his readiness to fulfill any assigned tasks. He also expressed interest in running for mayor of Cheongju in the upcoming June 3 local elections.

The controversy centers on questions of ‘political timing’ and ‘inadequate vetting.’ The Democratic Party leadership has already faced criticism for failing to properly vet candidates, as evidenced by the late discovery of attorney Jeon’s past legal work during the second special investigation candidate recommendation process.

Reports indicate that Jeong’s team has acknowledged this lapse in the party’s verification process.

The news of Seo’s appointment, given his association with the ‘Sangbangwool and North Korea remittance case,’ has sparked internal dissent within the Democratic Party. Members are questioning the criteria for party appointments, especially at a time when party unity is being emphasized. There are concerns that these decisions are providing unnecessary complications for the presidential office.

Past controversies surrounding Seo are resurfacing. Media reports suggest that the spouse of the former deputy governor accused the legal team of coercion and pressure, leading to courtroom disturbances. Seo reportedly resigned from the legal team thereafter. However, the details and accountability of this situation remain contested, requiring further clarification through official statements and legal proceedings.

Political observers note that the party leadership appears to be inadvertently reinforcing a narrative of ‘verification failure.’ As the ruling party aims to strengthen its governance in its second year, ongoing controversies over personnel vetting could undermine its policy initiatives. If Jeong fails to address these verification issues head-on, the party risks further eroding trust between itself and the government, compounding the problems stemming from the special investigation candidate recommendations and the current legal advisor appointment controversy.
