Kang Byeong-deok, policy advisor to the Democratic Party leadership, has unveiled his second campaign promise: transforming Hanam City into a medical specialty hub. The cornerstone of this plan is to attract a large-scale medical complex to the H2 site in Changwoo-dong, combining a general hospital with biotech, anti-aging, and healthcare industries.
During his announcement on the 10th, Kang stated, “Despite Hanam’s rapid population growth and urban development, it still lacks adequate comprehensive medical infrastructure.” He added, “We aim to elevate the city’s status beyond merely attracting medical facilities. Our goal is to create a medical specialty complex that integrates industry, research, and cutting-edge healthcare functions.”
Kang emphasized that this initiative goes beyond the conventional concept of a ‘Healthcare City.’ He explained, “By establishing this medical specialty complex at the H2 site, we can not only expand services to improve citizens’ health but also upgrade Hanam into a medical hub. This hub will incorporate high-value industries such as biotechnology, anti-aging, and precision medicine.” He further stated, “We will generate quality jobs and position Hanam as South Korea’s premier medical specialty city.”
The H2 site is located in the Changwoo-dong area near Starfield. A previous attempt to develop a medical complex there during former Mayor Kim Sang-ho’s tenure was discontinued. Currently, Hanam City is conducting a study to explore potential uses for the site.
If elected, Kang plans to immediately form a dedicated team to advance this project. He stated, “We are in discussions with global medical institutions and bio-healthcare companies. We will also work closely with Gyeonggi Province and the federal government to establish the necessary institutional frameworks and administrative support systems.” He added, “Several prominent domestic and international medical and biotech companies have already expressed interest in this project.”
Previously, Kang proposed the construction of the tentatively named Misa-Wirye subway line as his first campaign promise. He indicated that he would continue to announce additional urban development initiatives in the coming weeks.
