On February 3, independent lawmaker Kang Seon-woo appeared at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Public Crime Investigation Division in Mapo District, Seoul. Kang faces allegations of accepting a 100 million KRW (approximately $75,000 USD) bribe for political nominations from former Seoul city council member Kim Kyung, facilitated by a former secretary identified only as Nam.

Kang Seon-woo, embroiled in the nomination bribery scandal, has reportedly sent a personal letter to lawmakers from the Democratic Party of Korea. In this letter, Kang denies the allegations and expresses his commitment to taking responsibility for the situation.

According to political sources on the 10th, Kang’s letter to Democratic Party lawmakers that afternoon began with a humble apology: “I deeply regret causing concern among you.” He then stated his intention to correct what he claims are inaccuracies in media reports.

Addressing the nomination bribery allegations, Kang firmly declared, “100 million KRW (approximately $75,000 USD) is not worth jeopardizing my political career or my entire life.” He explained that the shopping bag he received as a customary gift remains untouched in his home’s storage room.

Kang revealed that he only learned of the gift’s substantial value after receiving a complaint call from the candidate. He stated, “I immediately instructed my aide to return it and promptly informed the nomination committee secretary.”

The lawmaker also asserted, “I made several attempts to return it.” He emphasized, “If I had demanded 100 million KRW (approximately $75,000 USD), I wouldn’t have met in a conspicuous hotel café. And if I had solicited campaign contributions to be received in installments, there would be no reason for me to verify and attempt to return the funds.”

Prior to these developments, the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office had already requested arrest warrants for both Kang and former council member Kim Kyung on charges of violating political fund laws.
