Blatant lies and unjustified absences undermine the National Assembly’s authority

On the 10th, President Lee Jae-myung declared, “We must swiftly determine the veracity and legitimacy of perjury allegations in the National Assembly. This is crucial for the Assembly to effectively fulfill its role.”

During a cabinet meeting at the Blue House, President Lee noted, “There seems to be a backlog of perjury cases in the National Assembly. I urge you to give this matter special attention.”

He elaborated, “The National Assembly employs various methods to uncover truth and facts when making decisions. These include activities such as hearings and parliamentary investigations.”

Lee continued, “However, we’re seeing far too many instances of blatant lies and unexcused absences that disregard the Assembly’s authority. This erosion of respect is concerning, regardless of whether it benefits the ruling party or the opposition.”

He stressed, “This issue directly impacts the powers and authority of the National Assembly as a core state institution and a fundamental pillar of our constitutional order.”

The President also observed, “Democracy has become a critical factor in global competition. We’ve entered an era where a nation’s competitiveness is determined by its democratic capabilities. While democracy manifests in various spheres, the National Assembly should exemplify its principles.”

Lee added, “In a democracy, facts are paramount. When false information circulates, it impedes sound judgment and ultimately distorts the people’s exercise of sovereignty.”

Furthermore, he stated, “The media’s essential function of accurate and principled reporting significantly contributes to democratic progress. This is why it’s considered the fourth estate, alongside the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The media should receive due recognition and protection, enjoy corresponding benefits, and bear appropriate responsibilities.”
