Yoon Seok-yeol’s Trial: What to Expect from the High-Stakes Verdict on Charges of Insurrection

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s upcoming verdict on charges of leading a rebellion has prompted authorities to implement security measures around the Seoul Central District Court complex.

Legal sources reported on the 10th that from 8 PM on the 13th until midnight on the 19th, the main and north gates of the court complex will be completely closed to the public, with access limited to the east entrance only.

This decision was made in anticipation of large-scale demonstrations expected to coincide with Yoon’s first-instance ruling on rebellion charges on the 19th.

Similar precautions were taken on January 16th during Yoon’s previous court appearance for charges related to obstructing arrests and interfering with cabinet member deliberations, when the court bolstered security measures to manage the anticipated crowds.

The 25th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court, led by Presiding Judge Ji Gwi-yeon, is scheduled to deliver the verdict on Yoon’s rebellion charges at 3 PM on the 19th in courtroom 417.

During the final hearing on January 14th, the special prosecution team, headed by Special Prosecutor Jo Eun-seok, requested the maximum penalty of capital punishment for the former president.
