[Point Economy] Busan City and Gyeongsangnam-do Province have delivered a joint proposal from regional leaders to the Blue House, urging the government to make a decisive institutional move regarding administrative integration.
On the afternoon of the 10th, Kyung Yun-ho, special advisor to the Mayor of Busan, and Kim Young-sam, policy planning director of Gyeongnam Province, visited the Blue House. They presented the “Joint Proposal from Regional Leaders (Busan, Gyeongnam, Daejeon, and Chungnam) Regarding Administrative Integration” to the senior secretary for political affairs.
This proposal follows the agreements made during the “Meeting of City and Provincial Governors on Regional Integration” held in Seoul on February 2. It calls for government action to mitigate the dominance of the Seoul metropolitan area and revitalize regional self-sufficiency.
The joint proposal outlines three key demands to ensure effective administrative integration: First, establishing a basic law on administrative integration applicable nationwide. Second, guaranteeing local autonomy and fiscal decentralization to enable the integrated metropolitan government to function as a genuine local authority. Third, hosting direct communication meetings led by the President that go beyond inter-ministerial coordination.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “The administrative integration that combines Busan’s port infrastructure with Gyeongnam’s aerospace industry will serve as a new growth engine, reshaping South Korea’s national landscape.” He expressed his commitment, saying, “If the government provides legal and institutional guarantees, we are prepared to move forward immediately, uniting the will of 6.6 million residents of Busan and Gyeongnam.”
