Seong Jung-gi, a candidate for Gangnam district mayor, initiated his campaign on the morning of May 5th by visiting the GTX construction site at Yeongdong-daero. This marked his first official event following his formal registration as a candidate. During his site inspection, Seong emphasized that transportation is the cornerstone of Gangnam’s future for the next decade. He stated, “Commencing my campaign at the Yeongdong-daero mixed-use development site, which is set to become a global transportation hub, underscores my commitment to revolutionizing Gangnam’s transit system.” The Yeongdong-daero project is a massive undertaking centered around Samseong Station. It integrates GTX (Great Train eXpress), regional and urban rail networks, a bus transfer system, and underground space development. This project represents the largest transportation infrastructure initiative in Gangnam and is slated for completion during the next mayoral term.

Seong brings substantial experience to his candidacy. He served two terms on the Seoul City Council, dedicating eight years to the Transportation Committee. Additionally, he held the position of standing auditor for Seoul Metro, overseeing public transit operations, safety protocols, and financial systems. “My tenure on the City Council’s Transportation Committee provided hands-on policy experience, while my role at Seoul Metro gave me direct insight into urban rail safety and management,” Seong explained. He added, “My unique combination of academic background, administrative experience, and practical knowledge makes me an ideal candidate to shape Gangnam’s transportation future.” Seong emphasized the transformative nature of the Yeongdong-daero project, stating, “This isn’t just another construction project. It’s a comprehensive urban renewal initiative that will redefine Gangnam. As mayor, I’ll ensure that Gangnam becomes a global gateway, connecting not just Korea, but the world.” Looking ahead, Seong plans to continue his grassroots campaign approach. He intends to visit key sites related to daily life, safety, education, and welfare, seeking to develop solutions through direct engagement with the community.
